I sometimes encounter people who question the ‘value’ of values in an organization.
The thinking is that organizational values are a nice-to-have. Something that you spend time defining in the good times when there are no fires to put out.
I see it differently.
A clearly defined set of values is foundational to a successful organization’s decision-making process.
Values drive decisions, big and small. Decisions like, who to hire, what partnerships to pursue, corporate giving strategies, how you treat your employees, which customers to do business with, what KPIs you track, should you bring on investors, and so on.
When times get tough, an organization’s values will be the framework to come back to again and again.
Most importantly, when acted on consistently, values build trust. And when humans have trust, tough times are navigated with more ease and less drama.
While values are not a cure-all for the many challenges an organization might face over time, they are an essential guide to create structure and long term stability.
